Simple ways to prepare your home and property as summer gives way to cooler weather in Southeast Tennessee.
Fall in the Sequatchie Valley is one of the best times of the year. The temperatures finally start to come down, the leaves begin to change, and spending time outside becomes a little more enjoyable after a long Tennessee summer.
But the change of seasons also makes September and early fall a great time to give your home and property a little attention. Summer heat, humidity, storms, pollen, and everyday activity can leave behind more than we realize.
Before cooler weather settles in, here are a few things worth checking around your home.
Summer tends to bring plenty of the outdoors inside. Dust, pollen, grass, pet hair, and dirt accumulate in places that may not get much attention during regular cleaning.
Fall is a good time to tackle some of the areas that are easy to overlook:
Clean baseboards, doors, trim, and window sills
Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and vents
Vacuum underneath and behind furniture
Clean interior windows and glass doors
Wipe down cabinets and other high-touch surfaces
Wash or vacuum curtains and blinds
Clean entryways where dirt and debris tend to collect
Think of it as a reset before the house spends more time closed up during cooler weather.
A Tennessee summer can be rough on the exterior of a home. Heat, humidity, rain, pollen, algae, and dirt can leave siding, porches, sidewalks, and other surfaces looking tired by September.
Take a walk around the property and look for areas that could use attention. Porches, patios, walkways, driveways, and exterior surfaces may benefit from a thorough cleaning or pressure washing before colder weather arrives.
It's also a good opportunity to check around doors and windows for damaged weather stripping, loose caulk, or other small issues that could let cold air in later.
Here in the Sequatchie Valley, those beautiful fall colors eventually end up somewhere — and quite a few of them land in the gutters.
Check gutters and downspouts before the leaves really begin to fall, and then check them again later in the season. Clogged gutters can prevent water from draining properly and cause it to overflow around the roofline or foundation.
While you're outside, clear leaves and debris away from porches, steps, walkways, and drainage areas as well.
Fall is also a good time to look at the property as a whole.
Check for limbs that came down during summer storms, overgrown areas around the house, clogged drainage paths, damaged exterior fixtures, and anything else that may have gone unnoticed during the hotter months.
Small problems are usually much easier to address before winter weather arrives.
If you own a second home, vacation rental, or property that sits vacant for periods of time, seasonal changes deserve a little extra attention.
Check plumbing fixtures for leaks, make sure heating and cooling systems are operating properly, inspect doors and windows, look for signs of pests or moisture, and make sure the property is secure.
For homes that aren't occupied regularly, periodic property check-ins can also help catch small problems before they become expensive surprises.
Getting ready for fall doesn't have to mean spending an entire weekend working through an enormous checklist. A few hours spent cleaning, inspecting, and taking care of the little things can make the transition into cooler weather much easier.
And if you'd rather spend your fall weekend actually enjoying the Sequatchie Valley instead of cleaning it, that's where we come in.
